Totoro Cheeba

Totoro Cheeba - Another one of our more recent members to the collective, her dark ambient atmospheres give a great understanding of the emotion expressed in the music she produces.
This girl seriously needs more recognition and credit for what she does, as her music is so original its as if she has created her very own genre of experimental dance and electronic sounds.
here is her interview...

Tell us a bit about your background.
My earliest memories of music come from listening to my Dad play guitar, I was so intrigued by it. As i got older, I got my first guitar and started going to gigs and listening a lot of different kinds of music, like metal, ska and reggae, which I became extremely passionate about. My best friend Chloe and I would always be scraping up money to go to as many gigs as possible haha. The energy from live music is incredible. As I explored more kinds of music I came across a lot of bands that used synthesisers. I always listened to electronic music but seeing it in action was a different story. Then i started exploring drum and bass and jungle, dubstep and IDM kinda stuff. This was a very different scene to what I was used to - I started going sneaking into clubs underage and going to underground raves which captivated me. I was never so motivated academically, but always passionate for music, so I decided to study music tech where I began mixing, sequencing and experimenting.

What are your goals for the future?
To be honest, my only goal was to have people listen to and appreciate something that I had created.

What DAW do you find most effective?
When I was about 13 I downloaded acid pro and fruity loops but had no clue what I was doing and got all frustrated with it haha. When I got to college I started using ableton, which I thought was pretty cool. I've tried reason it's not for me atm, the one that i clicked with most was logic.

What are your most influential/favourite record labels?
Hyperdub knows no boundries, listening to that taught me that there doesn't need to be rules in music. They broke them all. Hotflush is a beautiful label. If you know anything about them i'm sure you're in love too. I also love Black acre, Mindset and Exit recs. And, of course, Undersky. They have a huge variety of styles and sounds.

Top 10 tracks at the moment?
Not in order...

Tokimonsta - Stigmatizing sex
Sepalcure - Fleur
Flying Lotus - Clock catcher
Jacques Green - Sorted
Sven Weisemann - Placid love
Baths - Rafting starlit everglades
Amon Tobin - Defocus
Radiohead - Lotus flower
Atsuko Cheeba - Brightside VIP (Totoro 4eva) <3

Shout outs?
Everyone from Undersky. It's going be an honour to be able to DJ for the label's 1st anniversary in Greece, so i'm super hyped for that! I'm also hyped to see everyone else play, i've heard big things from everyone. Also a special shout out to Atsuko. We help each other to grow and progress, he always helps me to see what I could be doing better. Together we are constantly learning, so i'm really enjoying the time we have together. Also shout outs to Duckem & Scalade, we're working on some collabs atm that i'm really excited about! PYC Sessions also deserve a big up for the support and they're working on some really awesome stuff right now so keep your eyes peeled for them!

What more can we say, most of her music is for free download, so take advantage of the generosity.
